5-Day Nyerere Mikumi Safari from Zanzibar 2026/2027

Your 5-day Nyerere safari from Zanzibar begins with a short morning flight (included) from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam (20–30 minutes). Your private safari guide will meet you at the airport and drive you directly to Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) along the smooth new road – about 5 hours with scenic stops.

You’ll arrive in time for a hot lunch and a short rest at camp.

In the late afternoon, head to the jetty for a magical sunset boat safari on the Rufiji River. Glide past wallowing hippos, basking crocodiles, drinking elephants and countless birds as the sky turns gold and pink – one of Africa’s most spectacular experiences.

Return to camp under a blanket of stars for dinner and your first night in the wilderness.

After an early breakfast, spend a full day on private game drives inside Nyerere National Park – Africa’s largest national park and one of Tanzania’s last true wilderness frontiers.

Far from the crowds of the Northern Circuit, Nyerere offers an authentic, off-the-beaten-track experience. Its vast size (larger than Switzerland) is home to huge herds of elephants, buffalo, giraffes, impalas, hartebeests, elands, lions, leopards and – with luck – packs of the ultra-rare African wild dogs.

Because visitor numbers are low, the wildlife here remains beautifully shy and the atmosphere wonderfully wild. Bird lovers will be thrilled too – over 350 species have been recorded, from fish eagles to giant kingfishers.

Return to camp in the late afternoon as the sun sets over the Rufiji River.

After breakfast, check out and start the day with a thrilling guided walking safari inside Nyerere National Park. Accompanied by an armed ranger-naturalist, explore the African wilderness on foot – tracking animals at close range, reading fresh spoor, and feeling the pulse of the bush in a way that’s impossible from a vehicle.

Safety is always first – your ranger carries a rifle and ensures the perfect distance from wildlife.

After the walk, continue with morning game drives as you slowly traverse the park towards the Matambwe Gate on the opposite side. This final drive often delivers excellent sightings while crossing different habitats.

Arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon for a well-earned rest, dinner and overnight.

After an early breakfast, check out and drive north through Kisaki towards Mikumi National Park (4th largest in Tanzania). You’ll arrive around midday or early afternoon, depending on road conditions.

Drop your bags and head straight out on an afternoon game drive across Mikumi’s open golden plains – often called the “Little Serengeti”. Look for large lion prides, elephants, giraffes, zebras and the park’s famous yellow baboons.

Mikumi’s minimal infrastructure has kept it beautifully wild and unspoiled. Walking safaris are allowed (optional extra cost) – a great chance to explore on foot with an armed ranger if you’d like one last bush walk.

Return to camp as the sun sets for dinner and overnight.

Enjoy a final morning game drive in Mikumi National Park – the perfect last chance to photograph lions, elephants, giraffes and the park’s famous yellow baboons on the open plains.

After breakfast, check out and drive back to Dar es Salaam (approx. 5–6 hours). You’ll arrive in good time for your short afternoon flight to Zanzibar.
